To finish up the year, I wanted to share a special book with you. I wanted the last book of the year to be magical, cozy, full of imagination and very heartwarming. Little Witch Hazel, a Year in the Forest, by Phoebe Wahl is just that, and so much more!
I was browsing Penguin Random House’s catalogue (as one does when bored), and instantly fell in love with the cover of this book. I love how rich and busy it is, there is something to look at in every corner, and who can avoid falling in love with the little witch and her pointy red hat? Luckily enough, two copies of this book were available at my favourite bookstore. It was love at first sight once again when I held a copy in my hands. Each page is filled with wonderfully textured illustrations. The style reminds me of block printing, with high contrast, clear borders and a limited colour palette… and so much texture! Little lines, imperfect colouring, scritch-scratching: it really feels like the illustrations were done with woodcarvings or colouring pencils (they were made digitally however!). The subject is just too lovely not to fall head over heels into the story: the reader follows Hazel, a little fairy witch who leads quite a busy life in the woods.
The book is divided in four parts, one for each season. We follow Hazel and her very busy schedule taking care of the different animals of the forest and harvesting plants and fruits. Each story holds a special message from each season, and the year wonderfully circles on itself, giving the whole book a sense of time and cohesion. I was immediately absorbed by the story and got so attached to the little fairy witch. It was wonderful to discover her friends and the other woodland creatures. I love when books give you a sense of homecoming and belonging, and this one is just the coziest book to settle into.
If you can only read one of the books I recommended this year, make it be this one! It is magical, whimsical and so rich! The illustrations are wonderfully well done and so enchanting, while the story is endearing and unexpected. I really hope you’ll give this one a read! It is one of those books I know I’ll come back to again and again to lift myself up, to venture into fairyland and to meet the wonderfully sweet little witch Hazel.

Pour finir l’année, je voulais partager un livre spécial avec vous. Je voulais que le dernier livre de l’année soit magique, douillet, plein d’imagination et très réconfortant. La petite sorcière Hazel, une année dans la forêt, de Phoebe Wahl est exactement cela, et bien plus encore!
Je parcourais le catalogue de Penguin Random House (comme on le fait quand on s’ennuie), et je suis instantanément tombée amoureuse de la couverture de ce livre. J’adore sa richesse et sa densité, il y a quelque chose à regarder dans chaque coin, et qui ne tomberait pas amoureux de la petite sorcière et de son chapeau rouge pointu ? Par chance, deux exemplaires de ce livre étaient disponibles chez ma librairie préférée. Ce fut une fois de plus le coup de foudre lorsque j’ai tenu un exemplaire entre mes mains. Chaque page est remplie d’illustrations merveilleusement texturées. Le style me rappelle l’impression en bloc, avec un contraste élevé, des bordures claires et une palette de couleurs limitée… et tant de texture ! Petites lignes, coloration imparfaite, frottements : on a vraiment l’impression que les illustrations ont été réalisées avec des gravures sur bois ou des crayons de couleur (elles ont toutefois été faites numériquement !). Le sujet est trop beau pour ne pas se laisser emporter par l’histoire : on y suit Hazel, une petite fée-sorcière qui mène une vie bien remplie dans les bois.
Le livre est divisé en quatre parties, une pour chaque saison. Nous suivons Hazel et son emploi du temps très chargé, qui consiste à s’occuper des différents animaux de la forêt et à récolter des plantes et des fruits. Chaque histoire contient un message spécial pour chaque saison, et l’année fait merveilleusement le tour sur elle-même, donnant à l’ensemble du livre un sentiment de temporalité et de cohésion. J’ai été immédiatement absorbée par l’histoire et je me suis attachée à la petite fée-sorcière. C’était merveilleux de découvrir ses amis et les autres créatures des bois. J’aime quand les livres vous donnent un sentiment de retour à la maison et d’appartenance, et celui-ci est tout simplement le livre le plus douillet dans lequel on puisse se glisser.
Si vous ne pouvez lire qu’un seul des livres que je vous ai recommandés cette année, faites en sorte que ce soit celui-ci ! Il est magique, fantaisiste et tellement riche ! Les illustrations sont merveilleusement bien faites et si enchanteresses, tandis que l’histoire est attachante et inattendue. J’espère vraiment que vous le lirez ! Il fait partie de ces livres auxquels je sais que je reviendrai encore et encore pour me remonter le moral, m’aventurer au pays des fées et retrouver la merveilleuse petite sorcière Hazel.
