The flowers are here!

The flowers are here!

The flowers are here!

They got snowed on again yesterday, but luckily all the snow was gone this morning, and I was able to go outside and snap these pictures you. I am so excited to see the flowers finally blooming! The hellebores are stunning, and I really hope they will spread around their corner of the garden. The daffodils make us instantly happy, and I also want to propagate them around. Their bright yellow is so warming to our winter-filled hearts. I even saw the tiniest little viola flower! It is so wonderful to have so many flowers pop out finally. Everything seems brighter all of a sudden in the garden, and there are so many things to see and look at, you would need eyes all around the head to see it all!

In the atelier, I’ve been continuing work on my forest flowers painting. It is a lot of fun because I find myself doing a lot of research on how other artists have approached light and shadows, and backgrounds. I am once again learning a lot through this piece. It is so motivating to be constantly searching and learning and finding solutions. Here is a snippet:

That’s it!
Until next week,

Take care 🧡🧡🧡

Can you believe we had snow at the beginning of the week? I still can’t!

The good thing about it being still pretty cold out, is that ****drum roll please**** I finished my sweater, and I can wear it! It was such a long project that I kept putting aside, but I’m so glad it is now finished!

I’m am getting very impatient to see flowers outside, but in the meantime, I am celebrating Spring with a new forest flowers painting. I’m just at the beginning of it, so there is not much to share. For this one, I am tackling my fear of backgrounds and trying something new (again). I hope it turns out beautiful!

Outside of the atelier, I’ve been thinking a lot about…the atelier. Etsy has increased their fees, Patreon, my work on the blog, making enough sales have all been on my mind. I’ve seen other artists add a tip jar to their Etsy shop, and I thought that was a good idea. So, there is now a tip jar in my shop. It always feels a bit icky talking about and asking for money, but I want to continue to create quality and free content (the book reviews and this newsletter for example!). This still means that I spend time and put work into creating these free pages. The tip jar is there in case you have a desire and financial capacity to support my work. Of course, this is totally up to you, and I hope you will not feel like you have to! The fact that you are reading this makes me already so happy. Moving on!

I am also putting up a class on creativity, and I have been writing some more these past few weeks. I try to write for a 2 hours or so every few days, and I am almost done with the text part of the class. I cannot wait to get into the filming/photography part of this project! I’m still looking at many more weeks of work, but it is slowly taking shape. I’ll keep you posted on that project as well!

Finally, if you didn’t eat your weight in chocolate over the long weekend and are still craving something sweet, these crunchy peanut butter chocolates are amazing! Beware, they tend to disappear instantly!

That’s it!
Until next week,

Take care 🧡🧡🧡

I hope you are all doing well!

After spending a lot of time thinking, planning, and organizing, I’m finally back at the creative table: I have officially started work on a very special product I’d like to launch this Fall. It’s crazy to be thinking about October already when there aren’t any flowers or leaves out yet, but I want to have enough time to create something unique and beautiful. Also, because it is something new, I want to give myself enough time for prototyping and redirecting if things don’t work out. I’ll let you know more once I have some tangible things to share.

I have also been experimenting with different drawing styles and revisiting the basis of drawing with a lot of sketching. I’ve never had a drawing class presenting specific drawing techniques, so when the illustrator Julia Bausenhardt launched her Sketching Fundamentals class, I signed up. It is so nice to learn new tips and to give myself some time to draw and practice. Here is one of the exercises from this week’s teachings: I gave myself 30 seconds to look at each picture and then 30 seconds to draw from memory. I chose shoes because I never draw shoes… and it was so hard! It was very funny because it felt like the object would instantly disappear from my mind once the picture was gone. It was a really fun exercise, and I think I’ll try it again sometime.

Outside the atelier, I’ve been devouring the book “The Coyote Road, Trickster Tales”, edited by Ellen Datlow and Terry Windling. It is an anthology of stories featuring a trickster character. The Trickster is such an important archetype in stories and is present in all cultures. It is really interesting to discover new stories and authors, and so far each story is better than the previous one. I have to admit that I picked this book up because it is decorated by Charles Vess, one of my favourite illustrator, but it has been living up to its cover perfectly!

That’s it!
Until next week,

Take care 🧡🧡🧡

I hope you are all doing well!

This week I’ve been thinking a lot about the next few months and what projects I want to push forward. At the beginning of the year I made a long list of plants I’d like to draw, and even if many have been crossed out, many more are still waiting. Other ideas have made the list even longer! So, I’ve been organizing, prioritizing and trying to make decisions. I’ll keep you posted!

The weather is finally looking up, and we just came back from a little break in the sun with the cats. Our old lady cat is such a sun lover and was so happy to lounge outside for the first time this year.

In other news, I’ve also completed the knitting part of my sweater (remember when I shared just the collar?). I still have a few finishing touches to work on for it to be completely finished, but the larger part of the work is done! Yay!

That’s it!
Until next week,

Take care 🧡🧡🧡

I hope you are all doing well!

This week, I’ve been dreaming of summer. With our little seedlings growing each day, it is so much fun imagining our garden in just a few weeks. We are planting some different varieties of sunflowers this year: teddy bear and mammoth sunflowers seedlings have sprouted! Maybe it is because of that that I wanted to paint this sunflower. Yellow flower present very particular challenges because yellow paint it quite difficult to move around once it is on paper. Shadows are also different because you don’t want the bright yellow to turn grey or murky. All that makes for a very interesting painting experience. The sunflower also presents its own particular challenges. This time, I’ve surrendered and kept the centre of the flower quite simple, but I think I’ll research some more on the double spiral the seeds form and on how to draw them. In any case, it was once again a very fun painting to work on, and I hope you’ll like it too!

If you want to see more of my painting, head over to my portfolio!

Outside the atelier, I’ve been compulsively checking on our seedlings. Some of the seeds we bought this year were marked as having a low germination rate. So of course, they almost all sprouted! I’m not complaining, but it does mean that we will have some separation work to do. I’m hoping we will be able to do this with minimal disturbance and have good results. Any tips are welcomed!

That’s it!
Until next week,

Take care 🧡🧡🧡

So, did you guess which fascinating plant-insect duo I was painting last week? Well, it was the incredible Monarch butterfly and Milkweed team! These two exceptional beings have a symbiotic relationship: the butterfly helps pollinate the plant, while the plant provides food for the caterpillars. It is truly incredible to learn more about this relationship, and it made the painting that much more fun and interesting. If you live in North America and have access to some land, it is a good idea to see which milkweed species is native to your area and to plant some! They have the most beautiful blooms and seed pods, which makes them attractive plants to have around the garden. Plus, who wouldn’t want to have the chance of seeing beautiful monarch butterflies?

If you want to see more of my painting, head over to my portfolio!

Spring is finally here! Yes, it is still snowing, and yes some days are colder than what I’d like, but look! Tulips have started to show up, promising us incredible blooms and colours.

I’ve started a new painting! I’m experimenting with a different style for this one, and it’s very interesting. This is an idea I’ve had for a long time, and I had planned to work on it later this year, but last week I decided now was the good time for it. Can you guess what I am painting? Here is a hint:

Outside the atelier, things are starting to feel a bit more like Spring. Mind you, everything is still covered under thick snow, but there is something in the air. We are also excited to start our seedlings soon. It’s always such a fun moment to prepare the plants we will have in the garden once the “real” spring will be here. This year, I’m dreaming of flowers and colours all around.

As I work on my new painting, I have been listening to The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend. Some booktubers have compared it to Harry Potter, so I had no choice but to give this book a try. It is very entertaining so far!

That’s it!
Until next week,

It’s finished! I finally completed my wild violet painting this week. I am so happy with how it turned out. I am still experimenting with backgrounds and composition, and so this piece is in fact many different parts assembled together. I also wanted to write a bit about violets because they are such pretty flowers. I was inspired by Victorian journals and paintings. I really hope you’ll like this piece. If you want to see more about my process, head over to my portfolio!

Outside the atelier, the temperature are tentatively going slowly up, and it has been such a treat to go out in the sun. Mind you, there is still so much snow everywhere, but there is definitively something different in the air: the first waves of Spring!

I’ve finished the vlog for February (it is linked bellow)! I hope it will be a relaxing moment for you.

I hope you are all doing well!

This week, I’ve been working hard on a painting I cannot wait to share with you. Progress is slow because I’m dealing still with pain and discomfort. It is much better as you can deduce, since I am back at the painting table! It has been such a comfort to be able to make some progress and to disconnect from everything while painting. I’m trying something a bit different this time, and I hope the final result will be beautiful!

Aside from creating new illustrations, I’m also wondering about diversifying my work to maybe include lessons or tutorials. This is very much still at the seed stage, but the idea keeps coming back to me. If you have any thoughts on this, I’d love to hear them!

Also, I’m working on editing February’s vlog, so stay tuned for it next week!
